NMBU inviterer til vitenskapsteoretisk forum om ekspertise og evidens

Carlo Martini er postdoktor ved Academy of Finlands Senter for fremragende forskning innen filosofi og samfunnsfag. Hans nåværende forskningsprosjekt er om evidens, kausalitet og argumentasjon, støttet av Finnish Cultural Foundation.

NMBU vitenskapsteoretisk forum ønsker velkommen til oppstarten av et nytt semester. Forumet er en møteplass for ansatte og studenter for å diskutere vitenskapsteoretiske og -filosofiske problemstillinger.

Abstract
When it comes to the hierarchy-of-evidence pyramid, in evidence-based science and evidence-based policy making, the contribution of subjective expert judgment shows up, if at all, only at the very bottom of the pyramid. In this talk I will argue that actually expert judgment is much more valuable, and much more ubiquitous, than what we could infer from the literature on evidence-based science. 
I will provide a historical overview of how the evidence-based paradigm has treated expert judgment, and what brought to the current classification of expert judgment at the bottom of the pyramid.
Nonetheless, I will show how, and why, some disciplines have recently rehabilitated expert judgment to the higher ranks of the evidential pyramid. I will stress the fact that there is a time and a place for expert judgment to contribute to the “total evidence process”, that is, to the process of gathering evidence relevant to a specific scientific problem.
