The Education Centre at Ås
The Education Centre at Ås offers initial training in Norwegian language and social studies for adult immigrants living in the municipalities of Frogn, Vestby and Ås. The school provides the possibility to take education at different levels. All education at this centre leads to formal and official exams and diplomas. Norwegian language training and social studies
Foreign nationals between 16 and 67 years of age who have a residence permit that forms the basis for a permanent residence permit in Norway, will have the right and obligation to participate in Norwegian language training and social studies. A minimum of 600 hours of Norwegian language training and social studies will be given free of charge within the first three years.
Work immigrants and their family members are not covered by the right to free Norwegian language training and social studies, but have the obligation to complete a total of 300 hours of tuition.
Foreign nationals have to complete their mandatory tuition, to be granted permanent residence permits or become Norwegian citizens.
If you hold a residence permit pursuant to the EEA regulations or if you are a national of one of the Nordic countries, tuition in the Norwegian language is not mandatory. The tuition is not free.
The introduction programme
The right and obligation to participate in an introduction programme shall apply to newly arrived foreign nationals between 18 and 55 years of age who need to obtain basic qualifications and who have been granted asylum (or a residence or work permit hence to the Immigration Act section 8, 9 or 22 with the restrictions mentioned in the Act).
The introduction programme shall be designed for persons who need to obtain basic qualifications.
The following groups have the right and obligation to participate in the programme:
• Refugees
• Persons who hold a residence permit on humanitarian grounds
• Persons reunited with family member belonging to one of the above two groups
• Persons who have been granted an autonomous residence permit following domestic abuse
It is assumed that the person requires a basic understanding of Norwegian society and employment options.
Upon completion or interruption of a programme, a certificate of participation shall be issued.
The programme may run for up to two years, with additional periods for approved leaves of absence. When special reasons so warrant, the programme may run for up to three years.
As soon as possible and within three months after a person is settled in a municipality or after a requirement of participation is presented, the municipality shall provide an introduction programme.
Refugees receive economic support whilst participating in the programme.
Individually adapted plan
An individually adapted plan shall be drawn up for any person who is to participate in an introduction programme. It shall be formulated on the basis of an identification of the training needs of the person concerned and of the measures that may be useful to the person concerned.
